Valsartan

Pharmacological class
Angiotension II inhibitors
Antihypertensive, vasodilator, congestive heart failure.
Indication
Heart failure, Hypertension, Left ventricular dysfunction, post-myocardial infarction.
Pregnancy Category
FDA Pregnancy:
Category C (first trimester), D (second and third trimesters)
Breast-feeding: valsartan not be administered to nursing mothers.
Precaution
Elderly patients may also experience greater sensitivity to the effects of valsartan.
Contraindication & Drug interaction
Contraindications
Except under special circumstances, this medication should not be used when the following medical problem exists:
Hypersensitivity to valsartan or any component of the product, Risk-benefit should be considered when the following medical problems exist: Dehydration, Heart Failure, Hepatic function impairment, mild to moderate, including biliary obstructive disorders, Hepatic function impairment, severe, Renal artery stenosis, unilateral or bilateral, Renal function impairment.
Drug interactions
Combinations containing any of the following medications, depending on the amount present, may also interact with this medication.ACE inhibitors, Beta blockers, Lithium Salts, Diuretics, Potassium-sparing drugs, potassium supplements, or potassium-containing salt substitutes, Warfarin.
Usual Adult Dose
320 mg per day (in divided doses for treatment of heart failure).
Usual Pediatric Dose
Safety and efficacy have not been established in pediatric patients less than 18 years of age.
Side Effects
Those indicating need for medical attention:
Incidence less frequent :
Hyperkalemia, postural hypotension, renal impairment, syncope
Incidence rare:
Angioedema, hypotension
Incidence not determined-Observed during clinical practice, estimates of frequency can not be determined, hepatitis, impaired renal function
Those indicating need for medical attention only if they continue or are bothersome
Incidence less frequent
Abdominal pain, arthralgia, back pain, blurred vision, coughing, diarrhea, dizziness, fatigue, headache, nausea, upper respiratory tract infection, viral infection.
Incidence not determined-Observed during clinical practice, estimates of frequency can not be determined, Alopecia.
